The Roots - Get Busy (Feat. Dice Raw, Peedi Crakk & DJ Jazzy Jeff)
Author: Ockshun Jockson
omg...so much about this is fire
the last roots record, "the tipping point" was my favorite hiphop record last year. by all indications, they are going to continue brining it.
EDIT: holy shit! here's another from the same director. pretty crazy, man!
excellent execution by the roots as always, but imo, at it's core this stuff seems like it is tired and/or reaching too hard. nice cameo by peedi... although i kinda liked dice better. the videos are pretty cool.
Brow: kinda harsh-ish... I actually really dug "Get Busy" tho' was I gotta admit that the other track just seemed like "more of the same", like the B-side part 2 of a James Brown single. (And what's up with the OFFICE SPACE meets FIGHT CLUB vs. RESERVOIR DOGS thing that's going on here.... is this all part of One Big Master Concept?)
yea, brow: gotta agree with ink. i read your comment, "seems tired and/or reaching" and was like, "...compared to what?"
i know they're no dj blackstarr or nothing *throws hands in air, backs away slowly*
I think I maybe kinda feel what the Brow's on about... reminds me in the vaguest way of when De La Soul decided to get all streetcore late in the game, to wha-huh? effect.
i think it's simply a reflection of what we're in right now. shit is wack right now. i'm not at all mad about an angry roots band.
The Roots are like the Miles Davis or Mingus of hip hop... pretty much whatever wacky direction they want to check out is worth checking out.
ok, let me turn this around. what about it is "fire" in your opinion? is it the fact they put a heavy analogue synth bassline on a minimal rap beat? if the synth was removed, what would be left?
have you two listened to blaqstarr? it may be of interest to you that he uses absolutely no samples, oj. it is just him and his brother doing crazy vocals.
nah i'm just teasing. i dont have a problem with blaqstarr.
whats fire? it's a great song in my opinion. it's a great video. it's a great all around package that will have a lasting - possibly timeless - appeal.
am i analyzing the track, dissecting basslines and shit? no. for me it's just a video/song that evokes emotion.
and finally, it has some serious talent on it: roots, jeff, peedi and dice raw.
i'm just sayin' it sounds like the roots with a heavy synth bass. heh. not much analysis there...
i think it is a quality product however. hence my comment "excellent execution". i have nothing but respect for the roots, so we agree at some level.
i guess i am just kinda personally burnt on the whole roots thing. rap in general really.
at least this wasn't another soldier boy clone... but is that even rap??
sure soldier boy's rap. i mean, that shit is huge. despite what the pitchforks and blogs are popping off about what dj shadow ate yesterday and why come so-and-so producer's new work isnt up to album xyz, what's going on in "the streets" (sorry, cliche i know) will always be propelling hiphop forward.
