The 1970s Were Some Strange-Ass Times.
Author: Ink-Stained Wretch
Even if I didn't have an affection for the delirious, politically incorrect mystery stories of Sax Rohmer (creator of the Insidious Dr. Fu Manchu), I'd still have picked up this weird old paperback just for the wha-huh??? cover art. This book came out in 1975, from the same publisher that also put out a then-new edition of The Romance of Sorcery, Sax Rohmer's breathless -- and even, occasionally, factually correct -- history of the occult.
There's a great book by Gary Lachman (ex-member of Blondie) called Turn Off Your Mind: The Dark Side of the Age of Aquarius which is all about the bizarre, occult-influences in late '60s pop culture (bleeding into the early '70s as I recall)... and part of the discussion relates to the sudden tide of high weirdness that started filling up the drugstore paperback racks.
